Abstract
Pedicle skin flaps are used extensively in plastic and reconstructive surgery. However, the functional viability of skin flaps has not been fully understood. So many tests such as intravital dye test, isotope extraction, red-cell volume, isotope clearance technique are introduced in order to access the functional status of the viable part of the skin flaps.
Also the clinical part problem that often confronts the reconstructive surgeon is when is the most appropriate time for division of an interpolation of flap.
Author sacrificed 80 adult rabbits to access the time-related changes in the vascular status of different size of pedicle skin flaps using ^(99m)Tc isotope clearance method.
The results are obtained as follows:
1. ^(99m)Tc isotope clearance is in orders of frequency as control, 1 : 4 flap, and 1 : 6 flap.
2. It is suggested that there is no significancy of 1 : 1 flap delay, because no significant difference between control and 1 : 1 flap after immediate operation.
3. In 1 : 4 flap, the clearance is similar as control at postoperative 5-7 days.
4. In 1 : 6 flap, the clearance is similar as control at postoperative 10-14 days.
These findings are suggested that over these period the vascularity and functional status of flaps are probably the same as that in normal skin and may be the optimal time for the transfer of delayed flaps.
